It’s over. Albuquerque’s Old Town Candy Lady says she will move out of her shop in the next 30 or 60 days or so, and she’s already looking for another place nearby where she can cook and sell her famous candy.
Candy Lady Debbie Hall can read the writing on the wall and it says bye-bye. A long-simmering rent issue with the landlord means it’s time to pack up the goodies and go – but not too far.
“I’m going to try to stay in Old Town because with all the publicity and with my 30 years here it would be foolish to go anyplace else,” Hall said in her busy shop at rio Grande and Mountain Thursday morning. “People would like to see me out of this store because it would be easier to get parking somewhere else. You know it’s difficult to shop in Old Town, but I think it’s important.”
Albuquerque actor Jeremiah Bitsui, who played Victor the drug-thug on “Breaking Bad”, was in the shop buying a selection of the Candy Lady’s finest confections. She is famous for the bright blue rock candy that was used to imitate blue meth in the TV show. Bitsui is a big Candy Lady fan.
“Location is important, but more than anything else she has a good business,” Bitsui said. “Personally, I think it was probably time when she had to start maybe thinking about other locations and kind of expanding.”
In fact, that’s the plan at this point. Hall has a court date on January 22 with her landlord, who has accused her of unlawful entry. At this stage, with her planning to move, that’s really just sprinkles on the old pecan log.
