Cleveland Thomas scored 7 points in overtime to lead New Mexico on the road over Wyoming 72-69.
New Mexico (11-3, 2-0) started their two game Mountain West road streak in Laramie against a Cowboy team who sought to slow down a fast opponent.
The effort did lead Wyoming (9-6, 0-2) to a very early lead that was taken over by New Mexico with an 11-0 run in the first half.
However, the Cowboy’s aggressiveness in the second half forced the Lobos into overtime. A Nathan Sobey dunk and two free throws from Riley Grabau tied the game with less than a minute left in the game.
But the Cowboys were held scoreless until Grabau hit two free throws with 1:30 left in the overtime period. He led all scorers with 24 points on 5 for 11 shooting including 50 percent from the free throw line.
Cameron Bairstow scored 15 and grabbed 4 board for New Mexico. Alex Kirk had 12 points and 8 rebounds while Kendall Williams finished with 10 points.
New Mexico's 11-0 run in the first half started with Williams dunking a half court steal.
In the next possession he fed Bairstow for the lead and then extended the score with a 3-point bucket.
Wyoming was last ahead 54-53 with five minutes left in the game. A jumper by Kirk and a 3 point basket by Deshawn Delaney (8pts) regained the lead for the Lobos.
A dunk by Sobe (16pts) brough the game to within one possession for the Cowboys with 22 seconds remaining. Williams missed the back end of a one and one free thrown play in the Lobos next possession.
Grabau then hit two free throws to force the game into overtime.
After several off shots from both teams, Thomas hit a 3 point basket to give New Mexico a lead in the extra period.
Cullen Neal came into replace Hugh Greenwood, who fouled out of the game with less than 2 minutes to play.
Neal picked up a foul and made his first free throw. After the shot he picked up a technical for blowing a kiss toward the Wyoming student section. The display of affection gave the Cowyboys two points and the ball with a chance to tie after Neal missed his second free throw.
Williams caused a turnover on the possession and created an opportunity for Thomas to seal the game from the free throw line.
Thomas, who had 12 points in the game, made his next four free throws to lead New Mexico to the road win.
