A new charter school in Shiprock will be the first of its kind.

Dream Diné Charter School will open this fall.

Among the curriculum will be Navajo language and culture.

The team who put together Dream Diné charter school have something to celebrate.

They’ve gotten state approval to open their new charter school.

"It’s great for the community because it’s something that's different from the schools that are already here," said Roselyn Begay, principal at Dream Diné

Dream Diné plans to open this fall at dine college campus with 30 students in kindergarten and first grade.

They eventually want to have 180 students from kindergarten to 8th grade.

The charter school will be the first on the New Mexico side of the Navajo Nation and they want to incorporate the Navajo language and culture into the curriculum.

"We’re going to use what is called the Navajo philosophy of learning which is a mandala in which are four fathers lived by," said Lula Begay, planning member for Dream Diné.

The hope is to get students back in touch with culture.

"A lot of young people have forgotten their language forgotten their way of life," said Lula Begay.

The school has started open enrollment.

Families are excited to get their kids into the school.

"We want to enroll our grandson into the dreams school because we believe if a child looks at a world in an indigenous viewpoint he'll have a better grasp of the modern world," said Duane “Chili” Yazzie.

Parents in the area who would like to enroll their student can learn more by contacting the school by emailing Director of Operations and Outreach Gavin Sosa at gavinsosa13@gmail.com
