Much of the nation has been dealing with major winter storms. Now another storm is headed our way, but it's not bringing in cold or snow.

It's a solar storm.

Solar storms form from explosions in the Sun which erupt like a volcano.

When a solar storm occurs, the Sun's energy spreads out into the solar system. Sometimes this can impact our communication devices.

Jim Greenhouse, the Space Science Director at the Museum of Natural History, says that

there can be effects on objects out in space and some of those effects can include overloading in some of the components that make up some satellites, but satellite companies tend to know this and build stronger components.

So it appears that your cell phone service won't be affected.

Another phenomenon that the solar storm causes is the beautiful Aurora Borealis, which is also known as the Northern Lights.

Unfortunately, New Mexicans won't be able to see them. The closest place that will have the view is northern Colorado.
