As lawmakers get ready to head back into session, Gov. Susana Martinez has given her take on where most of the state's money should go and she's clear, education is in need of help.

For the first time, the Albuquerque Public School Board took a closer look at the proposal.

The governor and the Public Education Department said the goal of this proposal – putting students first.

Under the governor's proposal, $100 million would go to education reform. But APS board members wonder, is it focused on the right things?

On the proposal – money to hire more teachers. Superintendent Winston Brooks doesn't think that's possible. He said the current job market would make it difficult to hire more people.

Another proposal is to raise a first year teacher's salary from $30,000 to $33,000. A spokesperson with the PED told KOB Eyewitness News 4 they know it's challenging hiring new teachers – that's why the governor has proposed a hike in pay. But some board members said they need more money, especially when competing with other states that pay their first year teachers a lot more.

So what about taxpayers? What did they have to say?

"I have two kids in public school right now. They're not getting paid enough for what they do that's for sure," said Zac Fredlund, who's an APS parent.

"There's other priorities that need to be also focused on. Definitely jobs," said Mercedes Lugo.

So what's next for this proposal? We'll find out starting Jan. 21 when the legislative session kicks off in Santa Fe.
