FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — A San Juan County Sheriff's Office deputy and his wife have been arrested after state police tried to take custody of the deputy's 6-year-old stepson.

Authorities say 50-year-old Kenneth Clarke, of Aztec, has been charged with suspicion of obstruction after the couple tried to drive away from investigators Wednesday.

The Daily Times reports Joy Clarke has also been charged with obstruction and filing a false report.

Capt. Brice Current says Clarke was put on paid administrative leave this week when the office learned of the state police investigation.

New Mexico State Police say they started an investigation Dec. 30 after the couple accused the boy's father of sexually assaulting the child.

Police say there was no evidence and they were required to return to the boy to his father.
