State Senate Majority Whip Tim Keller has released a statement in response to Tuesday's State of the State speech by Gov. Susana Martinez.

The statement reads: “The challenges New Mexican families face are plentiful but the Governor’s speech painted a rose-colored picture. It was notably absent of any of the big ideas our state needs to truly move the needle on our lagging job growth, to implement sorely needed early childhood programs that benefits our kids first and foremost, or to get our behavioral health system back on track after months of crisis.

“The Governor’s proposed policies do not touch on the everyday realities that New Mexicans experience. Folks want better schools, accessible healthcare, and good jobs. The real state of our state includes an economic recovery that has been painfully slow compared to our neighbors, an administration that has allowed out-of-state, for-profit companies to dictate our education policies, and devastated behavioral health services.

“The Governor's proposals are small tweaks and minor funding increases. That’s why we need a comprehensive plan to create long-term, good-paying jobs in New Mexico.  We need truly bold and informed ideas to tap into New Mexico’s potential and climb out of the bottom of the barrel in national rankings on jobs, child welfare and education.

“During this legislative session, I look forward to working with legislators from all across New Mexico and from both sides of the aisle on more substantial proposals to start moving the needle on these issues that truly impact our families.”
