The 49-year-old man who was shot to death in Albuquerque's West Side faced child rape charges in the past.

Edward Hernandez died at UNM Hospital Wednesday night after he was shot in a remote area on Paseo del Norte just west of Rainbow Road.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department says deputies are investigating whether the murder is connected to the child rape charges.

Authorities said a red Honda sedan with a temporary license plate in the back window may have been in the area at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call (505)-798-7000.
