On Super Bowl Sunday night, leaders from Mothers Against Drunk Driving have a message for partiers.
MADD is reminding New Mexicans to be safe, especially after a high-profile drinking and driving death last weekend.
Jacob Williams, a repeat DWI offender, is accused of killing Danny Sanchez and critically injuring his daughter after hitting their motorcycle last Saturday in Belen. Dolly Otero of MADD says those celebrating tonight's big game need to plan for more than just the party.
"Make a plan, get a designated driver, sleep over, whatever you need to do, just don't get behind that wheel," Otero said.
Otero says often big events like the Super Bowl cause folks to be short-sighted when it comes to safety. It's costly to have a DWI and it stays on your record for 10 years.
Albuquerque police say they will be out looking for drunk drivers all weekend. In Bernalillo County you can use the tavern taxi program.
Call 999-1400 for a safe ride home in Albuquerque. In Santa Fe, the number is 438-0000.
