An infant is fighting for her life after being physically and sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend, and police say the child had been referred to the Children Youth and Families Department by medical staff multiple times before the incident.
Police say doctors referred the four-month-old girl to CYFD three other times before this because of injuries she had. They say doctors also referred the mother’s two year old daughter to CYFD at least once. Police say Friday night, the mother’s boyfriend injured the infant to the point where she may not make it.
Police say 19-year-old Elijah Fernandez was likely on Spice when he abused the child.
“That baby, because of the trauma to her body was rushed to the hospital right away and a full investigation was launched,” Officer Simon Drobik said. “I literally cannot explain to you what happened because it is so graphic you will not be able to air the charges.”
Police responded to the child’s apartment on Copper where she lives with her mother, grandmother and two year old sister around 11 Friday night. A criminal complaint says the baby’s grandmother’s boyfriend called them saying the baby was not breathing.
He later told them the baby had been in Fernandez’s care while the mother was out doing laundry, and that Fernandez and the baby’s mother often smoke spice.
When police got to the apartment, Fernandez told them the baby had fallen off the bed.
“We realized because of the trauma to the baby that that is not what had happened or transpired,” Drobik said.
Police say Fernandez later admitted to slapping her because she was crying. A sexual assault nurse examiner evaluated the infant and found that more had happened.
Police interviewed everyone at the apartment. Officers say the mother could face charges.
Police say the two year old girl also living at the home was left in the care of the grandmother.
