Darlene Martinez is a determined Albuquerque woman with 11 grandchildren and a heart that is breaking over recent news stories about children abused in New Mexico.

"I kept thinking our government has to do something about this. Something's not right," Martinez said.

Martinez channeled her determination into social media, launching a Facebook page called "WAKE UP New Mexico" and bringing together others who are calling for action.

The story of baby Izabellah is just the most recent to be profiled on her page.

9-year-old Omaree Varela's story is also there. Omaree was allegedly kicked to death by his mother.

"Omaree tried to talk and nobody listened to him. I don't want this to happen to other kids," Martinez said.

The Facebook page calls for new laws to protect kids.

Martinez believes an adult who takes a child's life should pay with a life sentence.

She also believes there are many like her who would volunteer their time to help meet with struggling families.

"I'm ready for this. You give me this and I'll help. I'll do anything that I have to do to help so that we can be heard," Martinez said.
