Archbishop of Santa Fe Michael Sheehan will retire this year under church law.

Canon law stipulates that a priest must retire at the age of 75.

Sheehan will turn 75 on July 9 and will also be celebrating his 50th anniversary in the priesthood this summer.

Sheehan will submit his letter of resignation to the Holy See.

A farewell celebration is in the planning stages.
