Nathaniel Tavarez was shot at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell five weeks ago.

The 12-year-old suffered wounds to the face, neck, and chest after another student opened fire in the school’s gym.

Friday, the Roswell community had a big welcome home for Nathaniel.

Hundreds lined the streets to celebrate a homecoming that happened much earlier than they thought.

It’s been a long road for 12-year-old Nathaniel Tavarez.

He was shot in the face, neck, and chest at Berrendo Middle School.

But his road home was filled with warm welcomers in Roswell.

The 12-year-old just returned from Texas, where he endured heart, stomach, brain, and eye surgery at two different hospitals.

Even though he just had the eye surgery Wednesday, his family said he’s already getting some of his eyesight back and is in good spirits.

“We let him know how many people are here, he's very happy," said his sister Ashley Tavarez.

His sister tells KOB Eyewitness News 4 the traumatic experience has been life-changing for the whole family.

“In every way possible, but we're looking at the bright side of things," said Tavarez.

But they’re just happy to be home.

“He’s good, just waiting for his eyes to heal that's all we're waiting for," said Tavarez.

Nathaniel’s family tells KOB he wants to return to Berrendo Middle School.

But for now, he is going to be homeschooled.

13-year-old Kendal Sanders was also shot.

She returned home less than a week after being shot in the arm.

The suspected shooter, 12-year-old Mason Campbell is being held at a juvenile detention center in Roswell.
