Car accident leaves one dead north of Eunice

Lea County – One person is dead after two vehicles crashed north of Eunice, New Mexico.  According to New Mexico State Police, the incident happened at approximately 8:36am on State Road 248, when a tanker trailer traveling eastbound collided with a pick-up truck heading in the opposite direction.

The deceased has been identified as 46 year-old Robert Allen Armacost of Conroe, TX.  According to the police report, Armacost approached a curve on the road and drifted over the center line into the opposite lane of traffic striking the tanker trailer.  Armacost died instantaneously at the scene of the accident.  The driver of the commercial vehicle, was identified as 57 year-old Antonio Ochoa Samaniego of Arizona.  Mr.Ochoa was not injured in the crash.

At this point authorities indicated that the main contributing factor in this crash was “driver inattention.”  Toxicology reports are pending from OMI to determine whether alcohol was a contributing factor.
