It appears the reality show "COPS" is coming to Bernalillo County whether the city of Albuquerque likes it or not.
Many argue perception is everything when it comes to a city's image and "COPS" could hurt business, but Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston says there is no proof that is going to happen with the show this time around.
“Watcha-gonna-do, watcha-gonna-do when we shut the door on you,” said Council President Ken Sanchez, “That's the message that we want to send out to Sheriff Houston and let’s keep the “COPS” TV show out of Albuquerque."
The message is clear said Albuquerque City Councilors Ken Sanchez and Don Harris.
They are introducing a resolution asking Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston to change his mind, to keep the TV show “COPS” from filming with deputies.
“Let’s not open the door once again in allowing “COPS” to come back to our city,” said Council President Sanchez.
He says filming “COPS” here will hurt the economy by keeping people and businesses from coming to the city.
Ten years ago when the show worked with the Albuquerque Police Department, Sanchez says he answered multiple phone calls from concerned visitors.
But Sheriff Houston says this is a way to promote transparency and there is no way to prove the economy took a hit because of the show.
“”COPS” has been featured several times in Houston particularly in Harris County so there is no problem," said Clay Ilesanmi, a visitor from Houston.
“First impression is that there could be quite a bit of crime there,” said Brittany Cook from Kentucky.
“I don't think it would really change my perception of the city,” said Lana Mims who is visiting from Tulsa, Oklahoma. “Bad things happen everywhere and “COPS” is just a television show of what police officers do.”
Sheriff Houston says the production will be able to shoot in the city as long as they are with BCSO.
Filming will start in April.
This resolution will be voted on in the next meeting March 3.
