Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry swore in the city's new police chief on Wednesday.

Gorden Eden, Jr. was selected to lead the Albuquerque Police Department from more than 40 applicants. He is taking over for former Interim Chief Allen Banks, who has been in the position for the last six months.

Eden joins APD after serving as secretary of the state Department of Public Safety, which oversees the State Police. He has also served as a sate police officer and U.S. Marshal.

APD's former chief, Ray Schultz, retired in August. This, amid a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into APD for an unusually high rate of officer-involved shootings in recent years.
