A man and woman are behind bars after police said they stole a bait car item and hurt a detective while shooting at officers early Thursday.

The chase started near Yale and Kathryn in southeast Albuquerque. Around 1:30 a.m., police said 19-year-old Antonio Delgadillo-Loera and 18-year-old Maria Guadalupe-Cruz stole a bait item set up near the airport on Sunport Place SE.

Detectives pursued the suspects, and shortly after, shots were fired.

"A male subject on the passenger side slid into the door window frame of the vehicle and fired shots at the detective's vehicle," APD Chief Gorden Eden said.

APD officials confirm a bullet fragment hit the detective in the lower leg. The detective was not taken to the hospital and did not require further medical care.

Police said officers did not return fire during the chase.

The suspects were eventually taken into custody near Washington and Silver. Delgadillo-Loera was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting from a motor vehicle, auto burglary, conspiracy, tampering with evidence, and possession of a stolen firearm.

Guadalupe-Cruz is facing charges of auto burglary and conspiracy.
