The mother of 15-year-old Brandon Villalobos opened up Friday for the first time since her son was charged.

The district attorney says Brandon Villalobos will be tried as an adult.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 spoke with Loretta Villalobos shortly after that decision was made.

While many might just see a mug shot of Villalobos, his mother, Loretta sees a scared little boy.

“That’s not Brandon,” she said, “That mug shot is not Brandon.”

She didn't want to go on camera, but while she talked she couldn't hold back tears.

“It’s like a big nightmare,” she said.

Villalobos is charged with first degree murder. Valencia County Deputies say he killed his friend 12-year old Alex Madrid and tried hiding his body under a mattress a field in Meadow Lake, NM.

“I don't feel that he did this,” she said, “I'm going to be there for my son since day one until this is all over with, but trying him as an adult is not right.”

Loretta says her son has a four-month-old daughter.

She says he has the mind of a 5th grader and what her son needs is mental help.

“He can get the treatment that he needs because he is on meds right now and he doesn't understand what is going on,” she said. “My son is not a monster.”

She says their family has known Alex Madrid for years.

She has not made contact with the Madrid family yet, but says they've donated money to their donation account.

She says in the end, there are two families who are grieving.

The Madrid family says they are satisfied Villalobos will be tried as an adult, but they also hope he is sentenced as an adult as well.

If Villalobos is convicted, a judge could decide to sentence the 15-year-old as a juvenile if there's evidence he can be rehabilitated. If not, Villalobos could be sentenced as an adult. The maximum is 30 years in prison.
