A local independent Albuquerque filmmaker is gaining buzz for his short film.
Director Alejandro Montoya Marin's film “The Princess and the Musician” has been accepted to the 2014 Taos Film Festival and is also on the radar of many other festivals across the country.
The film tells the story of two strangers who meet on a chance encounter at a hotel bar.
The pair connect after they both reveal stories about their childhood dreams and just how different those dreams are from reality.
Marin plays “Ben” who reviews music for a magazine in Colorado, but always dreamed of being a musician himself.
Actress Kristen DeVore Rakes' character “Judy” works for a medical supply company, which is a long way from her dream of being a princess.
The film touches on a very familiar subject for many people and Rakes believes this is why she connected with her character so well.
“I really did want to be a princess when I was growing up,” Rakes said. “We all have these things that I think that we want when we're younger and we dream about. Then I feel like as you get into your early 20's you start to see the world is not quite what you hoped it would be.”
Marin, who also wrote the story, says his inspiration came from a very personal place.
“It was written for someone I used to be with a couple years ago, and I guess by doing this was my way of coping with the loss of someone that was really close to me,” Marin said.
Marin says his inspiration came from films such as “Jerry Maguire.”
“Why I write romantic-drama comedies is because I want people to feel the inspiration I felt with several movies like 'Jerry Maguire', 'Chasing Amy',” Marin said.
The film itself was shot at the Double Tree Hotel downtown and at the University of New Mexico.
The attention for the film has spread from Albuquerque to a newspaper article in Tamaulipas, Mexico.
“The Princess and the Musician” will premiere at the Kimo Theatre on April 16 at 7p.m.
Admission is free.
