We all know oil and water do not mix but what about oil and snow?
Local ski rental shops say business is booming and they're crediting the oilfield industry for their success.
There are 20,000 oil field and gas workers in New Mexico and when those employees take off after a two week shift on the rig some find themselves on the slopes.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 spoke with several ski shop owners in the area who are giving this business a warm welcome.
The beautiful view is also bringing in a new cliental--oilfield workers.
“Oil definitely affects the ski business in New Mexico” said Chip Storm with Ski-Tech in Santa Fe. He says some of his customers literally drove off the rig and into his shop.
“Oil business is up they tend to ski and spend a little bit more money,” Storm said.
He says many oilfield workers have weeks off at a time and Santa Fe is a quick get-away.
Many oilfield companies will also hold their conferences and meetings in ski areas for some work and play.
“We get the executive side, but we do see the rigors themselves that definitely come in so we get a little of all of it,” he said.
Unfortunately Storm says just like the weather, oil prices are never a sure bet.
“Spring Break is coming up so hopefully these increasing oil prices will have an effect on the ski business in New Mexico,” Storm said.
