New details have emerged about the death of an inmate at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility.

Authorities tell KOB Eyewitness News 4 that Javier Molina was attacked and murdered by fellow gang members on Friday night.

Prison authorities are taking a look at their own procedures to see if the incident could have been prevented.

"We're doing an investigation to make sure that the officers went in, that they responded the way they were supposed to respond, and to ensure that we had done everything we could to have to protect this inmate," Alex Tomlin with the state Department of Corrections said.

Prison staff pre-screens inmates at the prison, before they place them in a housing unit.

That is to make sure there is no enemy, or threat within the unit itself.

Officials say after double-checking Molina’s file, they did not find any threat.
