He told the judge he’s having a “tragic” time.
Steve Casaus, the stepfather of Omaree Varela, was in court Monday – not for Omaree’s death but for possession of drugs. Casaus is the same guy who could be heard on a 911 call verbally abusing his 9 year old stepson, 6 months before the boy was kicked to death by his own mother, Casaus’ wife Synthia.
Casaus has still not been charged with any crime in connection with Omaree’s Dec. 27 death, but that investigation is not yet complete. Police say Casaus was running red lights when they pulled him over early Sunday morning. They say he reeked of booze, failed a field sobriety test and blew more than the 0.08 legal limit on the Breathalyzer. They found meth and marijuana in his car.
In court for arraignment, Casaus pleaded for mercy.
“It’s been a tragic time for our famiiy,” he told the judge. ‘ I’ve had two losses in the last couple of months. I lost my grandfather and my son and it’s just been really tragic. I’m losing my mother to cancer right now.”
But there’s that criminal record that just won’t go away. A staffer from the District Attorney’s office read off a long list of misdemeanor arrests and convictions, and then 11 felony arrests and 4 convictions. Those convictions include aggravated battery on a police officer in 1998, fraudulent use of a credit card in 1999, and receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle in 2001.
“Basically it’s just been a tragic time,” Casaus said. I’ve been really depressed, been going through a lot.”
The judge allowed Casaus to stay out of jail on a $2,500 bond. His wife Synthia is in jail on a child abuse resulting in death charge for the fatal kicking of her son Omaree.
