New Mexico State Police have identified the man shot by Los Lunas officers after police said he pointed a gun at them.

Russell Werner, 32, of Albuquerque is recovering at UNM Hospital after the incident.

On Sunday, two Los Lunas officers spotted a car at the Hilltop Terrace Apartments that had been involved in a chase with Belen police.

While the officers investigated the vehicle, police said Werner walked toward them while carrying an assault-style rifle.

The officers told Werner to drop the weapon, but police said he did not. Both officers fired shots at Werner and he was hit multiple times.

Werner is charged with two counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer and felon in possession of a firearm.

The investigation is still ongoing.
