A former Albuquerque police officer pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal child pornography charge.
Nelson Begay, 32, was arrested in November on a criminal complaint charging him with receiving and possessing child porn.
A week before his arrest, federal agents raided his home and took a computer and three boxes of evidence in the process. After the raid, Begay resigned from his position as an officer of the Albuquerque Police Department.
According to court filings, special agents identified an IP address being used to share child porn files while conducting an investigation. Subsequent investigations revealed that the IP address was subscribed to Begay at his home on Faye Avenue in northeast Albuquerque.
During the hearing today, Begay pleaded guilty to one count charging him with receiving child porn. In his plea agreement, Begay admitted that he used file-sharing software to download and share child pornography.
Begay faces a maximum federal prison sentence of 20 years.
Under the terms of his plea agreement, Begay will be required to pay $1,000 in restitution to one of the victims who appeared in a child porn video he had on his computer. Begay also will be required to register as a sex offender after he completes his prison sentence.
