Albuquerque police have released the 911 call from Tuesday's shooting and have identified the officer who discharged his firearm.
Officer James Eichel started with APD as a Public Service Aide in 2009 and has been a police officer since 2010. Eichel was one of several officers who responded to a 911 call that a suspect had pointed a gun at a juvenile at an apartment complex in the 200 block of 60th Street.
According to APD Chief Gorden Eden, officers established a safety perimeter in the area and attempted to communicate with the suspect prior to the shooting. Eden added that "the suspect exited the apartment with a firearm, and fired the firearm," prompting police to fire at the suspect.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Alfred Redwine, died at the hospital.
Eichel has not been involved in any previous officer-involved shootings.
