LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce says he's requested and accepted the resignation of his new press secretary, saying Rebekah Stevens' past role as a conservative activist had become a distraction.
The New Mexico Republican issued a statement Friday saying he'd hoped Stevens could transition from her previous role as an activist but that "major obstacles will prevent this."
Stevens had been recently hired as Pearce's new press secretary, succeeding Pearce's departing communications director, Eric Layer.
He's leaving Pearce's staff for a different job.
