The mother of the man killed in last week's APD shooting is speaking out for the first time since her son's death.

Alfred Redwine's mother, Sandra Othole, said she joined Sunday's APD protest to speak out for her son.

She believes the shooting was unjustified and the whole situation could have been avoided with more training.

After a standoff that lasted nearly an hour, police said Alfred Redwine came outside of his apartment near Coors and Central with a gun and fired at officers. But his sister and some witnesses claim it was a phone not a gun.

The shooting happened just hours after several hundred people took to the streets to protest Albuquerque police shooting and killing James Boyd, a homeless camper in the foothills.

"They need other people to help train these officers more, not just a couple of months and put them put them out in the street. They need more and more training, they have to do something. There is too many killings," Othole said.

Othole admits that her son has had past run-ins with the law, but she says he didn't deserve to be shot.

"He was not violent but he had anger, he had anger," Othole said. "My boy is a good boy. He was gentle and he loved a lot of people, he had a lot of friends and he loved his son, very very much."

APD chief Gorden Eden displayed the gun police say they found near Redwine's body. He also pointed out there were three rounds missing from the chamber of Redwine's gun.

Redwine's family said they have no plans to stop protesting against APD.
