Until today, we've never heard from James Boyd's family.
Tonight, his brother comes forward, in a story you'll only see on KOB Eyewitness News 4.
"They gunned him down, that's all there is to it."
It's a simple, yet powerful statement from Boyd's younger brother, Andrew.
KOB talked with him just hours after he found out the man at the center of a national story, and violent protests, was his own flesh and blood.
"It's sad that I found out two weeks later that my brother is dead," Andrew said.
Andrew wouldn't say exactly how he got that information, or comment on the last time he talked to his brother. But he had plenty to say about the controversy surrounding his death.
"Picture you have a sibling, whether it be a brother or a sister, watch them on a YouTube video get shot down," he said. "Then have a police dog bite you, and bite you, and bite you, and then gunned down again."
When it comes to Boyd's reported mental illness, Andrew didn't know anything about those issues. And when we asked about his brother allegedly having knives during that foothills situation...
"His excuse is always, I have knives, don't come near me, as a personal defense," Andrew said.
While he still has questions for APD about his brother's death, he is certain about one thing.
"I want justice for my brother. His death... his death is extremely unjustified."
He told KOB he's the only one in his family who has seen the video of his brother being shot in the foothills.
He says it's too disturbing for his parents to watch.
