An Albuquerque schoolteacher is in big trouble – accused of sexually touching one of his students – a 13-year-old girl.

Kenneth Jehle is 53 years old. He gave her some lip gloss, but police say the way he gave it to her is a crime.

It’s called criminal sexual contact of a minor – a 4th degree felony. Jehle is a special-ed teacher at Taft Middle School in the North Valley. The girl told police that on March 3 she was sitting on a railing outside Jehle’s portable classroom when he came up and said he had some lip gloss for her, dropped it in her lap and slid his hand across her groin. She said she asked him if he had really just touched her there, and he smiled and walked away. Another student said he saw it.

Jehle’s lawyer, Jaquelyn Robins, tried hard to spring him out of jail in his first felony appearance on Thursday afternoon.

“We would say that the nature of the offense, the nature of his community ties, would go toward a release on his own recognizance at this time,” Robins said. But Judge John Duran said no way.

“I do still feel that he is a threat to the community simply because there are not just children within APS, there are children within our entire community,” The judge said. “As such, I’m setting the bond at $50,000, cash only.”

Jehle has been an APS teacher for 15 years. He has a 17-year-old daughter.

The girl in this case also told police that in January Jehle put his hand in her back pocket to pull out her ringing cell phone. She said in February he touched her stomach, her upper thigh, and slapped her across the rear, although she said that last part may have been accidental.

If Jehle is convicted as charged he will be looking at up to a year and a half in prison.
