The second officer involved in a high profile child abuse case has been suspended.

The Albuquerque Police Department’s union chief confirmed that Scott McMurrough is under suspension.

Officers Gil Vigil and McMurrough arrived at the home of 9-year-old Omaree Varela last June, following a 911 call.

Omaree’s mother and stepfather were heard verbally abusing the boy on the call.

The officers spoke with the family for a few minutes and then left.

Six months after the incident, police say Omaree’s mother kicked him to death.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 was told that the two officers never listened to the intial 911 call, despite the dispatcher urging them to.

Vigil is now off the force.
