Man stable after officer-involved shooting in Torrance Co.

A man shot during a gunfire exchange with officers in Torrance County remains in stable condition at the hospital, according to New Mexico State Police.

The incident began late Saturday when a Torrance County deputy and Estancia police officer responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle off of State Road 55 near Mountainair. 

According to state police Sgt. Damyan Brown, a man shot at the two officers when they arrived at the scene. The officers returned fire, hitting the man.

The man was airlifted to UNM Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

No charges have been filed at this time, but state police will identify the man if charges are filed. 

The names of the officers involved in shooting have not been released at this time.
