Albuquerque police officers took an armed man into custody on Lomas near Eubank Wednesday morning.

According to APD spokeswoman Tasia Martinez, police received a 911 call about a man with a gun in the area. The 911 caller said the man was making suicidal threats and yelling for someone to call police.

The caller then told the 911 dispatcher that the man was shooting a gun outside.

Officers arrived at the scene around 7 a.m. and found the man. Martinez said the man pointed the gun at himself as the officers approached him.

The officers convinced the man to put the gun down and were able to safely take him into custody. The man, whose identity has not been released at this time, will undergo a mental health evaluation and face firearm charges.

Martinez said the man thanked officers for saving his life.

McCollum Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure during the incident. The school is no longer on a lockdown.

The police department released the full lapel video from an officer on the scene. Warning, it contains explicit language. Viewer discretion advised.
