The three carat diamond that was stolen from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science was returned Thursday morning.
Albuquerque police say someone tried to sell the diamond to a local gem and mineral shop after shopping the diamond around to several area stores.
"I would like to thank the gem and mineralogy community in the Albuquerque area – they really came through for us," said Charles Walter, Executive Director, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. "We are pleased to have the diamond back. It’s now locked in the museum’s vault."
The museum plans on returning the diamond back to the exhibit it was stolen from once upgrades and repairs are made to the exhibition case.
