Albuquerque police continued their investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting near Wyoming and Zuni throughout Monday morning.

According to Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden, the incident began when an officer spotted an auto theft suspect running east on Zuni. The officer began to pursue the suspect on foot.

During the chase, Eden said the suspect turned around and pointed a gun at the officer. The officer then shot at the suspect.

Eden said the suspect is deceased.

Police have not released the names of the suspect nor the officer involved in the incident. The officer has been placed on leave per department policy.

A police spokesperson has confirmed to KOB the suspect was a woman.

A group of protesters arrived at the scene before noon to voice their concerns about the latest police shooting in the city. This incident marks APD's third fatal police shooting of the year.

Two officers shot James Boyd during a confrontation in the foothills on March 16. He died the next day.

A week later, police shot and killed Alfred Redwine outside of an apartment complex on March 25. Police said Redwine was holding a gun and fired a shot after officers told him to drop the weapon.

The shooting comes more than a week after the Department of Justice released the findings from their investigation into the Albuquerque Police Department, saying many officers engaged in a pattern of "excessive force" during the past four years.
