The stepfather of Omaree Varela, the young boy who police said was kicked to death by his mother, is behind bars yet again.

Steve Casaus was arrested last night on a warrant for failing to comply with a court order. He's being held on a $5,000 bond at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Last month, Casaus was pulled over under suspicion of drunken driving. Police said Casaus submitted to a breath test and had a blood alcohol content at or above the legal limit. Authorities also found drugs in his vehicle.

Casaus was not charged in Omaree's death, but investigators said he was home at the time of the incident.

Community civil rights groups, such as the Albuquerque NAACP and the state chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, started a new petition urging the district attorney to look into possible charges against Casaus in the boy's death.
