A New Mexico woman thought she was making a new friendship on Facebook, but her Casanova turned into a con.

Betty Jacques has been divorced for 17 years. With her daughter living in California, she gets on Facebook to stay in touch with family and meet new people.

One day she got a friend request from a person and thought he must know somebody in her family. But, he didn't know someone in her family, and he wanted to get to know Betty a lot more.

They exchanged phone numbers, and when his background story kept changing, the red flags came up for Betty. "From what he said, right away started saying I love you, and I can't wait for our life together, I can't wait for you to be Mrs. whatever his name was," Betty said.

He asked if she was alone; where did she live; did she have somebody living in the house with her. Betty had a gut feeling he was a scammer.

Then, late Monday night, she had the proof to back it up. "Last night I got an email asking me for $8,000," Betty said. That's when she disconnected their relationship.

Her major concern out of all this isn't for her. "If he's doing this to me and I'm aware, what is he doing to other women? Especially women of my age who are alone and lonely," Betty said.

Those worries are why she contacted KOB Eyewitness News 4, to give a heads up to other women who could become victims.

"These people are out there, they exist and they will do whatever it takes to get you into their confidence and then take whatever they can," Betty said.

Another red flag for Betty: The scammer never wanted to actually talk on the phone. He did a few times, but he told Betty he was from Augusta, Georgia. She said, however, his accent sounded like he was from Europe.
