A 53-year-old man faces a murder charge after Albuquerque police found his wife dead inside their home during a welfare check on Tuesday.

APD spokeswoman Tasia Martinez said officers responded to a home in the 11900 block of Persimmon Avenue NE to check on the couple who lived there.

Officers forced entry into the home and found 53-year-old Geraldine Hoffland dead at the scene. Rescue personnel took 53-year-old Larry Hoffland to the hospital for apparent self-inflicted injuries, according to police.

Hoffland is being charged with an open count  of murder and will be booked upon his release from the hospital. The cause of his wife's death is pending autopsy.
