The stepfather of 9-year-old Omaree Varela was back in court Wednesday after violating the terms of his probation.

Steve Casaus was arrested a month ago on drug charges. The judge let him out on bond, provided he stayed out of trouble.

Casaus has admitted he was in the house at the time Omaree Varela was allegedly kicked to death by his mother back in December. The District Attorney is still investigating Casaus in connection with Omaree's death.

In the meantime, he has been in and out of jail on a long list of drug related charges.

Community civil rights groups, such as the Albuquerque NAACP, want Casaus behind bars. The NAACP is circulating a petition urging the District Attorney to look into possible charges against Casaus in connection Varela's death.

Casaus is expected back in court Thursday for a new case relating to drug trafficking charges.
