North America's largest powwow gets underway in Albuquerque this weekend.

The 31st annual Gathering of Nations means a big boost to the local economy.

Thousands of people are expected to fill The Pit this weekend for the event. Visitors will be staying in local hotels, eating at local restaurants – so the city loves the event.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 talked to some small business vendors who were setting up Wednesday and they said the Gathering of Nations is their biggest event of the year. For some, it's even bigger than Balloon Fiesta.

Alex Trujillo told KOB it's guaranteed that there will be thousands of people every year, which means good money for his business.

"I've already got friends that come down from Canada and actually call me by name and the people from New York and all the different reservations, the Seminoles, they all come around. I mean, they're just from all over the country and beyond so we have a good time," Trujillo said.
