Court documents are revealing new information about how Albuquerque police were able to arrest Steve Casaus.

The stepfather of Omaree Varela, the 9-year-old boy allegedly kicked to death by his own mother, was arrested Monday after an undercover drug sting.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by KOB Eyewitness News 4, two undercover informants working with police contacted Casaus’ daughter, who organized a drug deal between her father and the informants.

The document states, “…Monique had contacted her dad (Steven Casaus) and that he agreed to sell them a $100.00 of Methamphetamine.”

After the alleged drug deal, officers followed Casaus and arrested him. Investigators said they found more than $20,000 in cash, a handgun and drugs which belonged to him.

Casaus is facing charges including drug possession, drug trafficking and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday. A warrant was issued for Casaus’ arrest after he violated probation related to another arrest last month.

The District Attorney is still investigating Casaus in connection to the death of his 9-year-old stepson, Omaree Varela.

Police said Omaree's mother, Synthia Varela Casaus, kicked her son to death in December last year. Investigators said Casaus was there when it happened. The District Attorney said she will decide whether to take action against Casaus in the case at the end of the month.
