A cat that wound up trapped in a storm drain managed to escape Tuesday night, after a failed rescue attempt by city crews and neighbors.
Neighbors in the Vista Del Sol Mobile Home Park nicknamed the cat ‘Buddy’ after following the sound of its cries Monday. At first neighbors called several different agencies but said the city wasn’t doing anything to help. Some residents worried the cat wouldn’t survive the cold temperatures at night and started giving it food and water through the grate.
“It can't stay down there forever,” said Valarie Valdez. “It's going to die. It's a living being so my concern is getting it out.”
Valdez said the Animal Welfare Department told her there was nothing officers could do Monday night. KOB learned that was because it was too late in the evening to get crews on scene to remove the metal grate.
“They say there are pipe systems under the trailer park and it will crawl out the same way it crawled in,” said Valdez. “I don't see it that way because it's been there a couple of days.”
On Tuesday, animal welfare officers returned to the scene and called in crews to open the drain, but the cat ran into a tunnel and disappeared. Officers said the cat appeared to be in good condition and cats frequently crawl into storm drains. Neighbors said the cat later got out on its own.
