Steve Casaus, the stepfather of Omaree Varela, has been indicted in the death of the 9-year-old-boy.

A grand jury returned two indictments against Casaus. A felony child abuse indictment involves Casuas' alleged involvement in the death of his stepson. The indictment lists a total of six counts of child abuse against Casaus.

A second indictment alleges Casaus was trafficking methamphetamine, among other charges.

Last week, District Attorney Kari Brandenburg said the announcement would be made at the end of the month.

Investigators say Casaus was home at the time of 9-year-old Omaree Varela's death.

The boy's mother, Synthia Varela-Casaus, is currently the only one charged. Albuquerque police said she kicked Omaree to death.

Last month, an arrest warrant was issued for Casaus on a drug possession charge. He faced a judge for the charge last week.

Court documents show Casaus's own daughter, Monique, unknowingly helped confidential informants set up an undercover drug deal with her dad.

That's how officers were able to find and arrest him.
