On Wednesday, an attorney for rape suspect Ryan Ruff said the BMW where police say an alleged incident occurred has been available all along and that all police had to do was ask. He says his client has driven it, but hasn’t raped anyone in it.
“The most important thing I’m going to say today is that Ryan Ruff is innocent,” public defender Susan Burgess Farrell said.
Ruff’s attorneys called out University of New Mexico police for their handling of the case.
“The investigation into this matter has been lacking at best, it's deficient so far,” attorney George Anthony Bleus said.
He said they’re speaking up to save what’s left of the former UNM and current CNM student’s image.
“Through the media, his character has been, his character and reputation have been maligned and attacked and we're asking now that that stop,” Burgess Farrell said.
In a criminal complaint, the alleged victim said Ruff took turns raping a female student with UNM football players Crusoe Gongbay and SaQwan Edwards, and that Ruff held a gun to her head. Ruff’s lawyers say she lied about it to the school and to police.
On Tuesday, UNM police asked for tips on finding the BMW in which the victim says she was raped. A BMW was parked outside the attorney’s office Wednesday.
“I suggest to you that this vehicle, ever since Mr. Ruff had presented himself in this case, has always been available. It's been what, 3 weeks now, and they're looking for the vehicle now. The vehicle is outside right now,” Bleus said.
UNM Police say they’ve passed on my tip about the BMW to the right detectives and have no further comment at this time.
The alleged victim’s attorney says he has no comment about the claims made about her at this time.
