The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department says a motorcycle passenger was killed when the driver lost control and hit a semi on I-40.
Just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, a tour group from France was headed west on I-40 in a pack of 15 motorcycles. The tour group had just picked up the motorcycles after landing in Albuquerque to start their American tour, according to BCSO Captain Edward Mims.
When the group reached mile marker 143, Mims said a female driver on a Harley lost control and hit the trailer of a semi, causing the fatal crash. The passenger on the Harley, 53-year-old Erick Hamel, died at the scene.
The female driver, who has not been identified, sustained minor injuries and is being treated at UNM Hospital.
Mims said there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors in the fatal crash. Both driver and passenger were wearing helmets, but Hamel's came off in the crash.
The semi that the driver hit has not been located. There are no pending charges for the driver of the semi, but citizens with information on the semi are encouraged to call 798-7000. Mims said the semi driver may not be aware of the incident.
The investigation is ongoing and there are no charges against the driver of the motorcycle at this time.
