No outdoor water parks for Albuquerque anytime soon

The Beach Water Park, which contained acres of stairs, slides, and a lazy river full of water, was a summer haven for New Mexicans for 18 years until it shut down after receiving an unsatisfactory rating by the Environmental Health Department in 2005.

No water park in the Duke City existed after that until 2010 when the Hotel Cascada's 30,000 square foot water park opened its doors. Being the big ticket in town has done wonders for them.

"Summer's about to come up. We're booking a lot of community centers. A lot of birthday parties. I sell the whole second floor pretty much every weekend," said Hotel Cascada's Water Park Sales Manager Danielle Diaz.

In 2011, Mayor Berry discussed white-water rafting at Balloon Fiesta Park as part of his "ABQ: The Plan" initiative. That never came to fruition.

People still yearn for the past and yearn for a place to dip into this summer. The city says no companies want to jump in that pool and Hotel Cascada has an idea why.

"Regulations as far as water levels and water chlorination have to be taken into consideration. The lifeguards all have to be certified. If one lifeguard is not certified we could lose all our certification," Diaz said.

A lot of thought, planning, money, and water has to be put into a water park. There are options, like Hotel Cascada, Cliff's Amusement Park, and the 12 public pools scattered throughout the city.
