In a pair of lawsuits filed against the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, the lawyer representing two victims of alleged abuse by priests claims that 40 other New Mexico priests were “credibly accused” of abuse in the past as well.

The lawsuits specifically name two alleged rape cases in Albuquerque. One accused Father Walter Cassidy of abusing a child at Our Lady of Guadalupe in the late sixties. The other lawsuit alleges Father Sabine Griego abused the victim in 1986 at Queen of Heaven.

The lawsuit also lists the names of 40 former priests accused of sexually abusing children. KOB obtained a letter from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe sent a decade ago that appears to back up that claim. The letter said 44 priests were “credibly accused” of abuse, but the letter does not name them. It's unclear why the lawsuit names 40, while the letter says 44 priests.

On the website bishop-accountability.org, the same 40 priests named in the lawsuits are listed along with links to news articles detailing the sexual abuse allegations against them. Many of the allegations came to light in lawsuits filed by the alleged victims.

KOB reached out to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe for a comment but we have not received a response.
