Albuquerque police shot and killed a man accused of approaching officers with a knife after slashing another man's throat on Thursday night.

The incident started as a fight in the area of 4th Street and I-40 around 9:30 p.m. Witnesses told police a Good Samaritan tried to break up a fight between the suspect and a woman and that's when he was attacked.

"Witnesses stated that a male offender had thrown a woman to the ground and when a Good Samaritan tried to intervene, the male offender slashed the Good Samaritan's throat," APD Deputy Chief William Roseman said.

The suspect then ran and was confronted by officers. Roseman said the suspect walked toward them with a knife. Less-than-lethal force was used at first, but Roseman said the suspect was eventually shot and killed by two officers.

A woman who drove by the fight told KOB Eyewitness News 4 that she saw a man holding his neck and blood coming from his hands. She immediately called 911.

She said she heard a scream and saw another man beating up a woman in a parking lot near 2nd Street and I-40.

"I saw that he was hitting her and then I saw him with a knife in his hands, so I thought she was going to get stabbed too," the woman, who only wanted to be identified as Maria, said. "When he saw the car when I was driving to the parking lot, he took off walking toward the bridge."

The Good Samaritan was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The woman involved in the dispute was treated and released.

This is the fifth deadly officer-involved shooting since Gorden Eden took over as APD chief in February.
