KOB Eyewitness News 4 is learning more about the man witnesses say risked his life Thursday night to save a woman police say was being attacked by a man APD eventually shot and killed.
The would-be guardian angel ended up with his throat slashed.
On Friday, the people who know the homeless hero best say he's known for standing up for women.
In many ways the folks who live on the streets near 2nd and I-40 are a family -- all part of a pretty close group of homeless folks.
The good Samaritan who tried to help a woman in danger isn't perfect, but the people who know him best say he's well known for protecting a lot of the women who live in the area.
"He just defends people, he's a good person," said a woman who asked to go by 'M.' "He's a really good person; he's got a good heart."
In-between the concrete of downtown Albuquerque, "M" lives in a hidden homeless camp with one of her best friends "Boston."
"He always helped me," she said. "He wouldn't let nobody touch me."
Thursday night, "M" said Boston tried to protect another woman. He got in the middle of her and a man who was attacking her.
"I told him, don't go over there, something bad's going to happen, I warned him, "no."
But "M" said Boston always helps.
"That's exactly what he did last night," she said. "He stood up for her 'cause she was getting hurt."
Boston got his throat slashed when he tried to stop the man from hurting that woman.
"He just doesn't like women being hit," she said.
"M" said Boston comes to the rescue like a knight in shining armor if a lady is in danger.
"He won't let anybody hit a woman," she said.
"M" said Boston has stood up for her more times than she can count.
Once she said she was sucker punched by a man on drugs.
"When he saw my eyes he got mad," she said. "He was mad. He was all like, 'Who hit you?' He's stood up for me from the get-go. I mean, from the start. He calls me his little sister."
KOB has learned the man who was injured after intervening during the attack is getting better.
KOB doesn't know a lot about Boston.
His friends do say he can get pretty angry, he does struggle with his drinking, but standing up for women is something all his friends we spoke to say he does.
