Albuquerque police say car thieves are hitting the Northeast Heights area of the city hard these days.

Officers say the close proximity of I-25 and Tramway makes it easy for thieves to escape.

Albuquerque police say in just one week this month thieves broke into 29 cars in the area.

In those three weeks police say thieves got away with handbags, wallets, purses, iPads, backpacks and laptops.

Lt. Paul Szych says car break-ins are happening all over the city, but he says a growing population in the heights could be one reason the area is being targeted now.

But Lt. Szych says in most of these cases the break-ins could be prevented if people didn't leave their things in plain sight.

He says it's important to take your valuables out of your car and make sure to lock up.
