Teen dead after officer-involved shooting in Espanola

Espanola police confirm a 16-year-old boy was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Sunday morning.

According to police, the shooting took place around 10 a.m. near Riverside Drive and Corlett Road in Espanola.

Two officers responded to a report of a suspicious person. The officers made contact with the 16-year-old suspect, who police said was holding a gun and pointed it at the officers. The teen was shot by one of the officers and transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Espanola police told KOB Eyewitness News 4 that New Mexico State Police have taken over the investigation. 

The two officers have been put on standard three-day paid leave.
